Create a FAT32 USB Drive

Modified on Mon, 24 Oct 2022 at 02:33 PM

This guide is usually used as a part of other guides. Typically for BIOS Updates as they often prefer to be done from a FAT32 based USB drive.

Check the USB Drive File System

1.  Insert your USB

2.  Right click and select Properties

3.  Check the File System

If it's already FAT32 you're good to go.

If this reads any other value, it is best to change the drive formatting to FAT32 for any kind of UEFI BIOS update.

Some modern motherboards, like Z490 and newer and B550/X570 and newer do support NTFS but not all do so for simplicity sake this is the 'universal' method.

Format your USB drive to FAT32

Pre-requisites:

Please ensure you have a backup of ALL data on the USB drive before proceeding as any data stored on the drive will be lost

1.  Right click on the USB drive and select Format

2.  Change the File System to FAT32 and set the Allocation Unit Size to default and a Quick Format is fine

3.  Click Start and wait for the Format to complete, you should get a confirmation once it's done.

Now you can continue with the other guide.
